Creative Memphis Podcast
Episode #018: Andrew & Billy | Outtakes 2014

This week's episode is laid back. Relaxed. Chill, like your ever freezing extremities. We southerners may not do well in the cold, so let Andrew and Billy serve you up some warm cheer. A retrospective on Creative Memphis in 2014, some 2015 tease, goofy laughs, IndieMemphis retrospective, a spot on David Lynch impression, yelling, singing, whistling, and some truly average beat boxing.

In this episode there is some bad clients chat, design shop talk, critique's in design classes, praising and shaming Adobe, doing work that makes sense, and working with the right people.

Episode #016: Ben Smith, chef

A one week introductory in Asian cuisine was enough to spark an intense interest that would later drive Ben Smith to open his own restaurant in the heart of Cooper-Young. The conversation with Ben ranged from his experience teaching at L'ecole Culinaire, his own learning experience, what it's like to live and work in Hawaii, and how he came to open a restaurant in Memphis. The people who make your food are not who you think they are.

Blog posting tips

  • Take out the -ing & -ly / passive voice
  • Turn being verbs (was, is, be) find a way to turn it into an action verb. | Ex: "I was eating" -> "He ate"
  • Vary sentence length. A mix of short and long sentences. | Ex: "This morning i woke up and I wasn't really sure I was gonna have eggs, milk, or coffee. I thought about making some yougurt, but I was out of granola. I went with the coffee." - have contrast
  • Let your personal voice show, don't be stale. Don't write like you think you're supposed to sound.
  • Stand up and read your story outloud to analyze quality.

Josh Campbell

*Mark Twain Critique of Writing:*
“I notice that you use plain, simple language, short words and brief
sentences. That is the way to write English – it is the modern way and the
best way. Stick to it; don’t let fluff and flowers and verbosity creep in.
When you catch an adjective, kill it. No, I don’t mean utterly, but kill
most of them – then the rest will be valuable. They weaken when they are
close together. They give strength when they are wide apart. An adjective
habit, or a wordy, diffuse, flowery habit, once fastened upon a person, is
as hard to get rid of as any other vice.”
