Creative Memphis Podcast

Holly Whitfield came on to the show to talk Memphis, blogging, her creative history, and as an added bonus this also happened to be the inaugural launch day of Creative Memphis Podcast so we talk podcast shop a bit as well. I Love Memphis Blog [operated by Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau:  http://www.memphistravel.com/] has done so much for our city by becoming a space where Memphians and Memphis visitors can go check out what's ahead for the weekend, restaurant buzz, social media photos from locals, contests that benefit various local non-profits, interviews with prominent Memphians, and of course where to get brunch in Memphis on a lazy Sunday. They also have their own podcast too! So to entertain you on your Memorial Day weekend while bouncing from fun event to fun event, won't you please tune in to hear a couple of podcasters talk Memphis and then digress, a lot.

Blog posting tips

  • Take out the -ing & -ly / passive voice
  • Turn being verbs (was, is, be) find a way to turn it into an action verb. | Ex: "I was eating" -> "He ate"
  • Vary sentence length. A mix of short and long sentences. | Ex: "This morning i woke up and I wasn't really sure I was gonna have eggs, milk, or coffee. I thought about making some yougurt, but I was out of granola. I went with the coffee." - have contrast
  • Let your personal voice show, don't be stale. Don't write like you think you're supposed to sound.
  • Stand up and read your story outloud to analyze quality.

Josh Campbell

*Mark Twain Critique of Writing:*
“I notice that you use plain, simple language, short words and brief
sentences. That is the way to write English – it is the modern way and the
best way. Stick to it; don’t let fluff and flowers and verbosity creep in.
When you catch an adjective, kill it. No, I don’t mean utterly, but kill
most of them – then the rest will be valuable. They weaken when they are
close together. They give strength when they are wide apart. An adjective
habit, or a wordy, diffuse, flowery habit, once fastened upon a person, is
as hard to get rid of as any other vice.”
